SD-WAN vs MPLS for multi-location networks

When SD-WAN is the stronger direction
Multi-site businesses moving workloads to SaaS, opening branches quickly, or paying MPLS premiums for internet-bound traffic are the usual SD-WAN candidates. You gain link diversity, centralized policy, and often lower recurring WAN cost — if each site has acceptable broadband options and you invest in security design.
When MPLS still wins
Real-time applications with tight latency budgets, limited broadband at remote sites, or contractual requirements for private carrier networks can keep MPLS in the architecture. Hybrid MPLS + SD-WAN is common: protect what must stay private; optimize everything else.
